Metastable induced electron spectroscopy (MIES) is a technique that is exclusively surface sensitive. This technique probes the valence orbitals of only the outermost layer of atoms, allowing for the determination of molecule orientation. Other capabilities include:
Instrument Leader: Professor Gunther Andersson
MIES Facility Manager: Dr Liam Howard-Fabretto
Samples must be solid, dry, conductive and 10x10mm
MIES is purely surface sensitive and can be used to measure valence electron spectra which are only sensitive to the top-most sample layer. In the left image the alignment of the species on the surface is random, and thus the electron spectrum measured contains features from the red, black, and green species. In the right image, all surface species are aligned in the same way, and thus only the red component is contributing to the electron spectrum.
