Boost your job prospects in a competitive market or open the door towards a career in research.
An Honours degree is a one-year qualification allowing you to build on your undergraduate studies, deepen your knowledge and expand your networks.
It also provides you with a valuable grounding in research as it is your pathway to a Higher Degree by Research, such as a Doctorate degree (PhD) or Masters by Research. You can pursue Honours in one of two ways; by undertaking an additional year of specialised study once you have completed your bachelor degree, or through a four-year combined bachelor and honours degree, which you apply for via SATAC.
Throughout your Honours year you will work with an academic supervisor to discuss your research and receive guidance on your project.
This one-year qualification will provide you with a competitive edge in the job market as it will demonstrate skills in critical analysis, project management and a passion for your chosen field.
An Honours degree also proves you have achieved high academic standards and are capable of thriving in a career in research.
If a PhD or Masters by Research is on your radar for the future, Honours will open the door to these opportunities and prepare you for the skills and expertise required. It will also allow you to study an area of your interest in further depth, allowing you to build your expertise in that field and connect with distinguished academics.
Pursuing Honours at Flinders will help build your network with revered academics and experts in their field, connections you can take advantage of later in your research or professional career.
Honours is offered on campus only, providing you with direct access to respected and experienced academics and state-of-the-art facilities.
Studying Honours will provide a solid grounding in research skills and enhanced knowledge to help you progress towards a higher degree by research. Use skills you will acquire in research, critical analysis and innovative problem solving and be a part of new discoveries that will shape our world.

Entry into one-year Honours at Flinders is highly competitive and is usually based on a completed undergraduate degree within a related discipline with a GPA of 5.00 or above. Some disciplines such as Psychology (Honours) require a higher GA for admission.
Whether you’re invited to apply, or want to apply, you will need to contact the Honours coordinator in your discipline to discuss your project and arrange for supervision.
Before applying, domestic applicants are encouraged to read through our one-year honours application guide. The guide will assist you to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria to apply for Honours at Flinders, and includes details of the application and selection process, timelines, arranging supervision and how to apply.
Science and Engineering Honours applicants are required to submit an expression of interest for their preferred project via an online form.
All other applicants are required to complete and submit the Project Proposal Form as part of their application.
*not required for Science and Engineering or Psychology applications
Honours degrees are still classified as undergraduate.
If you are a domestic student you can continue to defer your Student Contribution through HECS-HELP, provided you meet the eligibility criteria. International students will need to pay their first semester's tuition fees prior to receiving their Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
A number of Honours scholarships are available throughout the year, including for Indigenous and regional and remote students. Head to the scholarships page and search for Honours.
Financial support is available to Flinders students through a range of government and donor-funded scholarships, plus support from external Trust and Foundations.
