Researchers from the Forensic and Clinical; Cognition Lab at Flinders University are seeking Adolescent participants (aged 14-17) for a study on Social Media and Wellbeing
If you agree for your child to participate in the research study, they will be asked to:
Complete a single 15–20-minute online survey where they will complete a series of questionnaires covering a range of issues related to:
- Social media engagement (e.g., “In the last 7 days how many days did you use social media”)
- Demographics (e.g., "What is your age?")
- Their general wellbeing and mental health (e.g., "I feel sad or empty").
Complete a daily diary (a 7-day 5-minute survey) where they will complete a series of questions each day including an assessment of:
- Their mood (e.g., “To what extend did you feel upset?”)
- Frequency of social media use (e.g., "On average, how many hours do you think you spent on social media today?")
- The types of social media content that they saw that day (e.g., "While browsing social media today, did you see any images or videos (including in posts, stories, videos, or lives) which included the following content: violence, graphic injury, food, animals, selfies?").
- A link to the diary survey will be sent to your child at the end of each day via text message or email.
Please DO NOT agree for your child to participate in this study if you think that any of these tasks will make them distressed or upset.
The study takes place entirely online. This study will allow us to evaluate young people’s experiences with social media and their general well-being.

Wanting to learn more about your primary school child's eating habits?
The project, led by a team of eating disorders researchers and clinicians from Australia, aims to develop a new tool for detecting eating problems in children.
Participation involves parent + child completing an online survey on two occasions about children’s eating habits, mental health and wellbeing. This survey also includes a new screening tool for identifying eating problems. These questions were developed with the help of people who have experienced or cared for someone with an eating disorder, and are safe for all children, regardless of whether they have eating concerns.
This study is funded by a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Medical Research Future Fund Grant awarded to the University-based research team. This study has been approved by the Children’s Health Queensland Health and Hospital Service Human Research Ethics Committee (EC00175).

Researchers from SAHMRI, Flinders University and SA Health are looking for healthy adults aged 18-35 to participate in the Antibiotics and Immune Responses Study (AVIRS). The aim of the study is to assess whether having antibiotics to deplete the gut microbiota influence the immune response to the BCG vaccine, which is commonly used to protect against tuberculosis. AVIRS Participants will receive up to $750 reimbursement for their time.
Participants will need to:
- Attend multiple study visits at SAHMRI and have blood taken
- Take antibiotic tablets for 3 days (or take no antibiotics)
- Receive up to two vaccinations (both are approved, safe, vaccines)
- Provide 3 stool samples (self-collected at home)
- Some participants will also have a skin sample (biopsy) taken at the end of the study

Newborn screening involves looking for a range of rare but serious health conditions in the first days of life. The purpose is to identify conditions as early as possible so that life-saving treatments can be provided.
In South Australia, standard of care newborn screening targets about 30 conditions, and almost every newborn is screened. NewbornsInSA is a research study looking at a new approach to expand newborn screening to detect over 600 genetic conditions using a combination of metabolite and DNA analysis. In our study, these are called ‘metabolomics’ and ‘genomic screening’.
Participating in NewbornsInSA is voluntary (opt-in). Parents and guardians who want their baby to be part of the NewbornsInSA research study on genomic newborn screening will need to enrol in the study.
Why participate in NewbornsInSA?
Babies enrolled in this research study will be screened for more conditions than babies not enrolled. The research study will cover the expenses of screening with no cost to families.
The NewbornsInSA study has the potential to identify genetic conditions before the baby shows any signs of disease. This means babies can receive treatment earlier. In many cases, earlier treatment reduces the likelihood of severe disability or permanent damage.
Most babies who are screened will not have a finding (low chance screen result). The few babies who will have a clinically significant finding (high chance screen result) will be able to receive treatment. This could be a significant and life changing intervention and limit disability caused by the condition. Treatments may include medication, dietary supplements, transplantation, or lifestyle modifications.

Depression is the leading cause of disease burden in middle-income and high-income countries. It is characterised by low mood, a loss of interest in or pleasure from things that were previously enjoyable, and other symptoms. Among other factors, it is thought that differences in the circadian system, or ‘body clock,’ may play a role in the development of and treatment of depression. Therefore, this study aims to investigate differences in the body clock between people with and without depression, and study how sleep and the body clock change with antidepressant treatment.

The sensation of breathlessness is a common symptom in people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It can be debilitating and has profound effects on quality of life.
This study will investigate how body signal (or interoceptive) attention can alter respiratory sensations in the short term by changing how the brain processes body signals and how signals are felt or ‘perceived’. The protocol will be tested in healthy participants and subsequently, participants with COPD who experience breathlessness more frequently.

The respiratory muscles are arguably the most important muscles in the body and are controlled by the brain to pull air into the lungs for breathing.
This study will develop better, safer methods to assess their function (i.e. their ability to pull air into the lungs, termed mechanics) and how the brain controls muscle activity (i.e. which muscles get more/less activity, termed respiratory neural drive). We want to test the mechanics and function of the respiratory in both healthy participants and participants with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The study will involve thinking about a negative event in your life.
We strongly suggest that if you believe you may be overly distressed by thinking about a negative event that you DO NOT participate in this experiment.
What happens during the study?
Participants will be asked to do a face-to-face experiment. In the experiment, participants will be asked to pay attention to any thoughts about their negative autobiographical event and complete a series of relevant questionnaires, thought monitoring and a computer task.
How long will it take?
The face-to-face experiment will take an hour to complete.

This study is investigating the psychology of drink choices. In this study, you will complete several questionnaires about your beverage consumption habits and dieting behaviour, and choose a drink from a computerised vending machine display. Your height and weight will also be measured.
The session will take approximately 15 mins.

Participants will complete several cognitive tasks on the computer, fill in questionnaires, and taste and rate a selection of drinks. Participants’ height and weight will also be measured.
The questionnaires and tasks will take around 70 mins. Following the session, you will be asked to complete short online surveys each day for a seven-day period. The study as a whole is estimated to take a total time commitment of 90 minutes.

Treatment to improve symptoms of disordered eating
Flinders University Services for Eating Disorders (FUSED) is offering treatment to improve symptoms of disordered eating, such as binge eating, purging, fasting and preoccupation with weight and shape.
What happens during treatment?
This treatment involves working 10-session cognitive behavioural therapy for eating disorders (CBT-T), with a trainee therapist at Flinders University.
As part of treatment you will also be asked to complete questionnaires on six occasions, up to 30 minutes on each occasion, and complete neuropsychological tests on two occasions, up to 30 minutes on each occasion, a total of 4 hours of assessment.
You will also be asked if you are willing to consent to this information being used in a research project investigating the impact of this intervention on quality of life.
Who can participate?
If you are over 15 years of age and are experiencing problems with disordered eating you may be eligible to participate.

Investigating the use of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to treat those who have been traumatised.
We are conducting a research study investigating how a more individualised Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) can be used to treat those who have been traumatised.
Participating in the study will involve attending 12-15 individual therapy sessions with a trained therapist. You will also be asked to complete an interview and questionnaires about your life experiences, beliefs and symptoms before therapy, immediately after and 3-months following therapy.
