South Australian artist Jake Holmes works across a variety of mediums, including screenprinting, mural painting, illustration, audio and collage. Through his creative practice, Holmes interrogates contemporary social and political issues, and documents place.
For his latest project - Writing the Climate – Holmes took inspiration from the political posters held by Flinders University Museum of Art, one of the most diverse collections of its kind in the nation. Acquired in the 1990s under the guidance of former Art Museum Director, Louise Dauth, and encompassing work from the ground-breaking exhibitions Truth Rules OK (1983) and Truth Rules II (1986), the poster collection now comprises some 400 works. Concerned with the social and political issues of its time, Holmes channels the messaging and spirt of the archive, to produce a powerful and persuasive call to action that is as timeless as it is timely.

Holmes has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Australia. Notable projects include Propaganda with the Australian War Memorial at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Victoria (2018), the C’mon Aussie C’mon Australia-wide poster campaign (2015), and South Australia Illustrated with the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide (2012). Holmes has undertaken several public art commissions in Australia and residencies in Darwin, Northern Territory and Rajasthan, India. His work is held in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Australian War Memorial, Canberra; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; and private collections both nationally and internationally.
The Guildhouse Collections Project with Flinders University Museum of Art provides artists with the opportunity to engage the Museum’s collections and staff to create new work for exhibition.
