FUMA Collections

Since 1966 when the first acquisitions were made by the former Department of Fine Arts, the Flinders University Museum of Art collection has grown to more than 8,000 works, making it one of the largest University art collections in Australia.

Four major collection areas include contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art; European prints; Post-object and documentation art; and Australian political prints and posters.

Smaller collections comprise colonial and 20th century Australian art; indigenous works from Papua New Guinea, North America and Africa; and Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Kuninao Utagawa (1793-1854) Japanese, Kabuki play scene (detail), date unknown, colour woodblock print on paper, 21 x 32.4 cm, Gift of Miss M.E Wharmby, Flinders University Museum of Art 2404

Holdings have been strengthened over the years through the generous support of many individuals. Long standing patrons Emeritus Professor JVS Megaw and the late Dr M Ruth Megaw have been instrumental in helping to build collections, particularly in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.

Significant donations have also been received from collectors including Stephanie and Julian Grose, Marion Elizabeth Wharmby, Margaret S Bain, Rodney Gooch, Christopher Hodges and Helen Eager, Edward Booth and Felicity Wright. Artists have generously supported the Art Museum with noteworthy gifts offered by Lidia Groblicka, Tim Burns, Danie Mellor, Brenda Croft, Felix Hess, Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula, Domenico de Clario, Mandy Martin, Bruce Petty, Imants Tillers and Jacqueline Hick.

Works are housed at Flinders University Museum of Art, Bedford Park, and are accessible by appointment.
