Professional accreditation/recognition

Graduates of this degree are eligible to apply to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered midwife.

What you will study

Develop a comprehensive grounding in theory and practice that will enable you to provide quality care and seek a rewarding career in midwifery. Topics cover areas such as anatomy and physiology of reproduction, maternal and infant nutrition, professional practice, and clinical knowledge.

Practical experience

Undertake 26 weeks of placement across the 2 year degree in public and private hospitals across metropolitan, rural and remote settings to expand your knowledge and skill base and put theory into practice.

Complete 10 x Continuity of Care Experiences (CoCE) where you follow women throughout their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal journey.

Practical experience requirements

Before commencing professional experience placement all students are required to complete certain compulsory requirements, including a National Criminal and Relevant History Screening, providing an up-to-date immunisation record and undertaking recognised Basic Emergency Life Support and Manual Handling programs.

The required pre-placement processes may take some time and some incur a financial cost, so you are strongly advised to begin them as early as possible before your professional experience placement.

Study abroad

Opportunities are available for 3rd year midwifery students to undertake a 4 week placement in the Northern Territory working in remote health facilities partnering with local indigenous communities.

When international borders re-open there will be opportunities for 3rd year midwifery students to undertake short study trips in South East Asia.

Entry requirements

Applicants must:

be a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, and
hold a current certificate of registration.

Where there are more applicants than places available, those with a bachelor degree will be ranked on academic merit; those who are hospital-trained will be ranked on the basis of relevant work experience - such applicants are therefore advised to provide details of their work experience when applying.

Additional Entry Requirements

Before commencing study to become a registered nurse, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires you to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency.

To do this, applicants must do one of the following:

Declare English is your primary language and before the course start date, you will have satisfactorily completed at least six years of schooling in English in one of the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United States, Canada, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom. At least two of the six years must be at a secondary school level, OR
Undertake an approved English language proficiency test no more than two years before the course start date and achieve specified minimum test results as indicated in the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Example: minimum of Academic IELTS 7.0 overall and 7.0 in Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening.
Acceptable tests are: Academic IELTS, OET, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OR
Declare you hold current registration as an enrolled nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Nursing and Midwifery (AHPRA).

When you graduate and apply for registration as a registered nurse in Australia, you will also need to meet the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
