The professional experience placements are fantastic. I did four weeks full-time on a ward in a hospital. That was by itself worth everything else I had done in the degree so far, and we do three more of them. Twenty two weeks in total.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

core topics in nursing in the Australian healthcare system; communication for nursing; human anatomy and physiology; health assessment for nursing; and introduction to research and evidence-based practice
option topics in psychosocial perspectives in health; First Nations health and cultural safety; and practice and professional placements

Second year

A typical second year may include:

core topics in pathophysiology, pharmacology and nursing management of health; legal and ethical considerations in nursing; and practice and professional placements
option topics in dimensions of physical and mental health; safety and quality in health; and practice and professional placements

Third year

A typical third year may include:

core topic in professional accountability, responsibility, governance and leadership in the role of the registered nurse
option topics in practice and professional placements and caring for people with chronic and complex health needs

The degree provides you with practical experience that prepares you for the workforce.

Professional experience placements prepare you for the workplace, both simulated in state-of-the-art laboratories and in clinical venues in rural and metropolitan South Australia.

Applicants can apply for this course using Year 12 qualifications, previous higher education study, TAFE/VET qualifications, or through adult entry (STAT/Foundation Studies/tertiary preparation course).

Rural and remote sub-quotas

An annual subquota is available for applicants from rural and remote areas. To be considered for the rural and remote subquota applicants must apply to SATAC in the normal way.

Applicants must also, within 10 working days after submitting the SATAC application, submit a Statutory Declaration to SATAC which confirms that they have lived in non-metropolitan areas of Australia (Remoteness Classifications RA2 to RA5) for at least 5 consecutive years, or 10 years cumulatively, from birth (i.e. during any period of their life). A Statutory Declaration form can be downloaded here.

Before commencing study to become a registered nurse, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires you to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency.

To do this, applicants must do one of the following:

Declare English is your primary language and before the course start date, you will have satisfactorily completed at least six years of schooling in English in one of the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United States, Canada, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom. At least two of the six years must be at a secondary school level, OR
Undertake an approved English language proficiency test no more than two years before the course start date and achieve specified minimum test results as indicated in the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Example: minimum of Academic IELTS 7.0 overall and 7.0 in Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening.
Acceptable tests are: IELTS (Academic), OET (Nursing), PTE (Academic),

Declare you hold current registration as an enrolled nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Nursing and Midwifery (AHPRA).

When you graduate and apply for registration as a registered nurse in Australia, you will also need to meet the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
