Midwife
Conducts pre-pregnancy, antenatal, labour, birthing, and postnatal care, supporting women and their families throughout the childbirth process. They monitor the health of both the mother and the baby during pregnancy, assist during labour and birth, and provide essential postnatal care. Midwives also offer education and advice on newborn care, breastfeeding, and family planning, supporting a safe and positive childbirth experience.

Offers midwifery services in a private practice setting, providing individualised continuity of care to pregnant and birthing people.

Accreditation or Professional Recognition

Undertake 29 weeks of placement across the 3 year degree in public and private hospitals across metropolitan, rural and remote settings
Before commencing professional experience placement all students are required to complete certain compulsory requirements, including a National Criminal and Relevant History Screening, providing an up-to-date immunisation record and undertaking recognised Basic Emergency Life Support and Manual Handling programs.
The required pre-placement processes may take some time and some incur a financial cost, so you are strongly advised to begin them as early as possible before your professional experience placement.
In order to complete the degree, you will need to undertake compulsory clinical placements including but not limited to:
- DHS Aged Care Sector
- Working with Children Check and Vulnerable Person Employment Screening
- Police Check
- SA Tuberculosis Services Screen
- Immunisations
- Annual Influenza
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate
- Manual Handling
- Hand hygiene
- Infection Control
- Bloodsafe Clinical Transfusion Practice
- SA Health Electronic Medical Record training.

Before commencing study to become a registered nurse, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires you to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency.
To do this, you must satisfy one of the following:
- Declare English is your primary language and before the course start date, you will have satisfactorily completed at least six years of schooling in English in a recognised country as indicated in the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). At least two of the six years must be at a secondary school level, OR
- Undertake an approved English language proficiency test no more than one year before the course start date and achieve specified minimum test results as indicated in the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Example: minimum of Academic IELTS 7.0 overall, 7.0 in Speaking, Reading and Listening and 6.5 in Writing. Acceptable tests are: Academic IELTS, Cambridge, OET (Nursing), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OR
- Declare you hold current registration as an enrolled nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Nursing and Midwifery (AHPRA).
When you graduate and apply for registration as a registered nurse in Australia, you will also need to meet the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

If you don’t meet our English language entry requirements and need to improve your English language proficiency, you can do so through our approved English Language Instruction Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) providers.
Please note, a test is required as evidence of English language proficiency even if an English language program has been completed. Tests accepted are Academic IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic OET and Cambridge.

Yes. Midwifery students are required to follow women throughout their antenatal, birth, and postnatal journey. Pre-registration students will have a minimum of 15 CoCE experiences throughout the degree.
No, you will not need to be on call for placements. Placements blocks range between 1 – 6 weeks and are scheduled at different times throughout the year. You will be rostered across all shifts over a 7-day week roster.
Yes, you will be required to be on call to successfully complete your CoCE. You will need to be available when the women are giving birth, which could be at any time, day or night. It is a requirement that you are available to be on call for the labour and birth for these women, equivalent to at least five times a year for each year of your degree.
A driver's licence is essential as public transport is not always available for shift work, CoCE appointments and rural placements.
