It lets you study a 3 year Bachelor of Arts first. If you complete this degree to the required standard, you will be guaranteed a place in the two-year masters degree, subject to an additional written statement entry requirement.

Why study Arts pathway to Secondary Teaching at Flinders

Continue through to Master of Teaching and:

gain the knowledge and skills required to register as a teacher in secondary school
undertake professional experience placements in secondary schools where you can learn practical skills, put theory into practice, and develop important relationships with students, parents and colleagues.

Your career

The Master of Teaching prepares graduates to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as a teacher in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways. Graduate roles include community education officer, and education and engagement officer.

school coordinators and principals
curriculum and policy advisers in departments of education
advisers to government departments and other policy makers.

Professional accreditation/recognition

The Master of Teaching qualification will enable you to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. You are advised to check registration requirements as they are subject to change. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions.

What you will study

In the first three years you will complete the Bachelor of Arts. Specialisations offered are: English or Creative Writing, Drama, Modern Languages (restricted to Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German and Modern Greek), Visual Arts, History, Geography and Environmental Studies, and Psychology.

On completing the Bachelor of Arts program to a required standard, you will be eligible to progress directly to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree. The Master of Teaching is a pre-service teaching degree. This course provides you with the background necessary to apply for registration as secondary teachers.

Practical experience

You will be engaged throughout the Master of Teaching program in developing the skills to become a teacher. The course includes blocks of professional experience in first and second year as required by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia.

What you will need

All College of Education, Psychology and Social Work pre-service teachers must obtain a Child-Related Employment Screening before undertaking their Professional Experience. This is a requirement of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD), in agreement with the Catholic Education and Independent Schools Boards. Pre-service teachers who are not cleared will therefore not be able to complete the requirements of the course.

Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task known as a Teaching Capabilities Statement as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills. This involves a short statement in response to three set questions used to demonstrate suitability for study and work in the teaching profession.

Inherent requirements

The Australian Government has introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Test for all initial teacher education (ITE) students to ensure they have the high level of personal literacy and numeracy skills required of teachers.

The test is a national instrument designed to assess elements of an individual's literacy and numeracy skills and will be used to demonstrate that ITE graduates are in the top 30 per cent of the population for literacy and numeracy and/or possess high levels of Australian First Nations language proficiency.

All students graduating from any ITE course in South Australia must have achieved the standard for both the literacy and numeracy components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) to graduate and/or demonstrate proof of high levels of Australian First Nations language proficiency.

From 2024, students who are required to sit the test will need to have a test attempt (but do not have to meet the test standard) in their first year of an accredited ITE course.
