Italy has one of the richest cultural heritages in western civilisation and has been a world leader in literature, architecture, painting, sculpture and music for the past 800 years. Today Italy is one of the wealthiest nations in the world and an essential tourist destination. Italy is a major trading partner with Australia—and increasingly with South Australia. Italian is spoken by many Australians, with more than half a million Italian Australians using it every day. You can practise and use Italian in your own community! Studying Italian at Flinders University has not only given me the opportunity to develop my language use in small classes where I’ve easily made friends and enjoyed studying Italian across a wide range of topics, texts and films, but also enabled me to study overseas in Italy and broaden my horizon. The independence, critical thinking and cultural knowledge is a very employable skill, and the teachers at Flinders are passionate and knowledgeable and have made my learning experience incredibly thorough and enjoyable. I would encourage anyone interested in studying a language to pursue this at Flinders.
Studying Italian at Flinders is great as the classes are streamed so that you are able to enter and learn at the correct proficiency level for you. The class sizes are also relatively small, which allows for more speaking opportunities within the classroom. The teachers are flexible as well with the topics covered and will work hard to ensure they are catering to all students’ needs and continually building upon grammar, vocabulary, and other necessary skills. I really loved the assessment pieces within the Italian topics as they allowed you to explore your own areas of interest and build up your knowledge and vocabulary regarding topics that also relate to other potential studies or career options. I found that this made Italian an excellent course to study alongside another degree and I can see that it will be highly relevant and useful for me moving forward career-wise. Studying Italian at Flinders has not only improved my proficiency in the language and culture but also enhanced my confidence in public speaking, text analysis, improvisation, and problem-solving to name a few.
