The Master of Teaching prepares graduates to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as a teacher in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways. Graduate roles include community education officer, and education and engagement officer.
This academic qualification will enable you to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. You are advised to check registration requirements as they are subject to change. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions.
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) consists of 72 units over 1.5 or two years. The 1.5 year version is taken as 45 units in the first year and 27 units in the last semester as a full time load, while the 2 year equivalent is taken as 36 units per year.
The study program includes an introduction to teaching and research in the education profession, researching learners and learning, and relationships for learning and teaching.
Curriculum topics will deal with understanding and developing curriculum in context in the middle years of school as well as senior years specialisations, and assessment in education.
Topics will discuss differentiation and inclusive educational practices, teaching Indigenous Australian students as well as professional issues in secondary education, and the reflective professional in action. Literacies and numeracies for the middle and secondary years and ICT will be covered. The program will include the required professional experience placements with preparation lectures and preliminary work
You will be engaged throughout the entire program in developing the skills to become a teacher. The course includes blocks of professional experience in the first and subsequent year as required by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia.
Child-Related Employment Screening
All College of Education, Psychology and Social Work pre-service teachers must obtain a Child-Related Employment Screening before undertaking their Professional Experience. This is a requirement of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD), in agreement with the Catholic Education and Independent Schools Boards. Pre-service teachers who are not cleared will therefore not be able to complete the requirements of the course.
Applicants must hold an approved undergraduate bachelor degree or equivalent qualification and must have completed topics that enable them to teach in South Australia to Year 12 in at least one subject specialisation and to Year 10 in a second subject specialisation offered by the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work. Applicants must normally have achieved a Flinders equivalent grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or above for consideration.
Master of Teaching (Secondary) (Physical Education) (2CM227) applicants must also meet the above requirements to teach to both Year 10 and Year 12, with one of the teaching areas being Physical Education.
The Master of Teaching is a pre-service teaching degree and admission normally will not be granted to applicants who already hold a teaching qualification. Selection is based on academic merit.
Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task known as a Teaching Capabilities Statement as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills. This involves a short statement in response to three set questions used to demonstrate suitability for study and work in the teaching profession.
Applicants who select this course as a preference during the application process will be directed to a page to meet this requirement.
Visit the Teaching Capabilities Statement page for further information
The Australian Government has introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Test for all initial teacher education (ITE) students to ensure they have the high level of personal literacy and numeracy skills required of teachers.
The test is a national instrument designed to assess elements of an individual's literacy and numeracy skills and will be used to demonstrate that ITE graduates are in the top 30 per cent of the population for literacy and numeracy.
All students graduating from any ITE course in South Australia must have achieved the standard for both the literacy and numeracy components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) to graduate.

Master of Teaching
Bella
Bella, a supply chain manager for a global corporation, graduated with a Bachelor of Business in 2021, and is now considering a change of career into education, specifically, as a secondary school educator.
During her studies, Bella completed five 1st year business-related undergraduate topics, one 1st year innovation topic and one 1st year elective topic. In second year, all topics were business-related topics except one free choice elective topic. This was also the same situation in 3rd year with all topics apart from one being business studies topics. She achieved a GPA of 5.5 for her degree. While this qualifies her to teach to year 12 in the Business Studies teaching area, she still requires four topics (with a maximum two at first year level) in a different teaching area to qualify for entry to the Master of Teaching (Secondary).
Bella didn't study four topics in another specialisation (such as Science, Modern Languages, History or English), so would therefore not be eligible to apply for the Flinders Master of Teaching (Secondary). As above, only three elective spaces are evident and this is not enough for another teaching area.
Bella could still apply for the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood), (Primary) or (Special Education), or alternatively study a degree in another field prior to applying to the Flinders Master of Teaching (Secondary).
Xander
Xander graduated from a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) in 2006, and completed six of 12 MBA topics in 2017-18. He has been working in the marketing and communications field ever since, but would now like to study to become a secondary teacher.
During his studies, Xander completed two 1st year economics-related undergraduate topics, three 2nd-year management and human resources topics, three 3rd-year marketing topics, and a Masters-level accounting topic. He achieved a GPA of 5 for the Bachelor of Commerce. While this qualifies Xander to teach to year 12 in the Business Studies teaching area, he still requires four topics (with a maximum 2 at first year level) in a different teaching area in order to qualify for entry to the Master of Teaching (Secondary). Xander happened to choose four English-focussed electives throughout his Commerce degree (with two at first year level, one at second year level and one at third year level).
Xander contacted Flinders to ensure he was eligible to apply, and after getting the green light, applied for entry into the Master of Teaching (Secondary), with the intent of teaching in the Business Studies and English teaching areas upon graduation.
