The postgraduate diabetes management and education program aims to provide you with the contemporary knowledge and skills required to effectively care for clients with diabetes mellitus and equips you to contribute to research in this area. The accredited graduate certificate comprises three theoretical topics and one practical topic involving 40 hours of clinical placement. The theoretical topics are conducted in a five-day block on campus.

The graduate certificate is accredited by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association and, on successful completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate professional entry level competence against the Australian Diabetes Educators Association National Core Competencies. The graduate certificate is also a core requirement in the process of becoming a credentialled diabetes educator.

Students complete four core topics, including a professional experience placement topic. These topics aim to provide students with professional entry level competence against the Australian Diabetes Educators Association National Core Competencies.
Students complete eight core topics focusing on the management of clients with diabetes, the principles of health promotion and client education and the psychological aspects of diabetes care. The courses includes a professional experience placement in a range of health venues.
Students complete nine core topics and two optional topics chosen from a range of topics available. Topics aim to provide students with the opportunity to examine the complexity of Primary Health Care issues related to diabetes management and education and implement the knowledge and skills required to effectively educate and manage clients with or at risk of diabetes across the lifespan.
You are required to do professional experience placement (work experience) during your program of study. Certain statutory and other requirements must be met before you are permitted to attend placement. View more details.
You must make a self-declaration as to your fitness to practise and advise of any pre-existing illness or disability that may impair your ability to practise. You will also be required to undergo a police check before your placements.
Students on placement have both an increased risk of most vaccine-preventable diseases as well as the potential to transmit infections to susceptible patients. Students who are required to complete placements as part of their course must therefore be immunised in accordance with the relevant state or territory immunisation standards and any additional private provider requirements as needed.
You must provide a completed and signed professional experience placement (PEP) support form (DOCX) before your clinical placements.
Applicants for the graduate certificate must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification, and have a minimum of one-year post-registration experience. All health professionals must hold a current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, or accredited within their discipline.
