The Graduate Diploma in Engineering Science can be taken as a standalone course or in combination with the Master of Engineering. It is specifically designed as a pathway to the University’s Master of Engineering courses to facilitate entry to these programs by graduates without an engineering degree. Australia is currently experiencing a substantial shortage of engineers. Graduates can work in an engineering related field where the skills and knowledge of engineering fundamentals and the ability to communicate with engineering professionals are needed.
The Graduate Diploma in Engineering Science itself is not accredited but successful students can enter the Master of Engineering programs, which are accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. Professional engineering courses accredited by Engineers Australia are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord.
You will be provided with study in both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering, and the course builds on your previous experience and knowledge.
You will be able to select a stream in biomedical, civil, electronics, mechanical or materials engineering. These five streams include coursework and some streams have room for a few topics to be selected. The exact program of study will depend on the qualifications you enter with.
Topics in the biomedical stream cover areas such as electronics, human physiology, and microprocessors.
Topics in the civil stream cover areas such as civil engineering design, engineering mechanics, engineering geology, and geomechanics.
Topics in the electronics stream may cover areas such as automation and industrial control, engineering programming, and analysis of engineering systems.
Topics in the mechanical stream cover areas such as engineering design, mechanics and structures, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and energy systems, and dynamics.
Topics in the materials stream cover areas such as solid mechanics, mechanics and structures, engineering physics, and materials.

In addition, whatever qualification is held, students are expected to be able to demonstrate previous study or recognised prior learning in communication and planning skills, mathematics (equivalent to first-year university mathematics), and science (equivalent to university undergraduate topics in chemistry and physics). Some basic knowledge of other relevant sciences will be assumed.

In addition, applicants must demonstrate successful completion of higher education topics in mathematics (equivalent to first year university mathematics) and science (equivalent to university undergraduate topics in physics). Some basic knowledge of biology and human physiology is also assumed. However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.
