The Master of Engineering (Electronics) is distinguished by the University’s strengths in instrumentation and control, including embedded systems and electronics for medical devices.
The world of instrumentation and control is rapidly evolving to include sophisticated, intelligent devices that can sense their environment, autonomously correct for disturbances, and interpret data from sensors to facilitate intelligent control of complex systems.
Designing and developing these devices is the responsibility of electronic engineers, who are playing an increasingly important role in the development of smart structures for automotive, aerospace and maritime engineering; bioinstrumentation; intelligent robotics; and environment monitoring.
Flinders specialises in research training for engineers, and the course offers you a choice of research projects in intelligent control, autonomous vehicles, robotics, image/signal processing, embedded systems, and bioinstrumentation. Most research projects are funded through national competitive grants and industry funding. Staff are directly involved on projects involving unmanned aerial/ underwater vehicles, video tracking, super-resolution, bioinstrumentation, and environmental sensors.

This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. Professional engineering courses accredited by Engineers Australia are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord. Graduates meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered professional engineering status.
The program provides a balance of advanced theoretical knowledge and associated project work. Topics cover areas such as standards, ethics and compliance; control systems; computer organisation and design; sensors and actuators; automation and industrial control, signal processing; project management and innovation; computer architecture; instrumentation; power electronics; autonomous systems; advanced electronic design; and a research project undertaken as part of a professional research team.
The course includes a work experience component where you will get hands-on industry experience in electronics engineering practice. It includes practical training using state-of-the-art design tools that are in high demand, and full-time access to laboratory and information resource facilities.
Applicants normally must hold Flinders University’s Graduate Diploma in Engineering Science (specialisation E1-E3), or a relevant Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Engineering Science or equivalent overseas qualification with an average grade of credit (5.0 out of 7) or greater. Students without such a qualification should apply for the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Science.
