Responding to the increasing demand for outdoor education practitioners, this degree provides you with an understanding of the significance of outdoor recreation, sport and physical activity within the context of a healthy lifestyle. The Outdoor Education study option provides you a range of skills and knowledge to work competently and confidently in a range of roles in the expanding field of Outdoor Education and Recreation. Learning is enhanced with foundational studies in sport, health and physical activity in the degree.

The Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity (Outdoor Education) will prepare graduates for a career in the sport development, sport coaching, leisure, health, outdoor education and recreation, sport and event management industries, and provide a pathway to further studies in physical education teaching through the Master of Teaching courses.

Outdoor education opportunities while you study

Five outdoor Leadership topics, including one placement based work integrated learning experience that include ability to accredit with Paddle Australia, Bushwalking Leadership and South Australian Rockclimbing Education Association.

40+ days learning practically in the field, plus 4 cultural site visits, plus 150+ hours with placement partners working as an outdoor professional.

Eligible for a range of post graduate studies including a Masters of Teaching with a specialisation in Outdoor Education, Physical Education or Health.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year might include:
  • an introduction to sport and physical activity, and sport in society
  • an introduction to international tourism management and topics in marketing principles, event design and practice, and interpretive tour guiding
  • studies in academic and professional communication; sociocultural constructions of movement in physical education; and nutrition, physical activity and health.

Second year

A typical second year might include:
  • studies in outdoor adventures, an introduction to Aboriginal studies, the psychology of sport participation and performance, health promotion for health professionals, exercise physiology, and health project management
  • option topics in areas of business, tourism, nutrition and disability.

Third year

A typical third year might include:
  • an industry placement field project
  • study in education in outdoor environments, introduction to outdoor activity leadership, facilitating learning and development in the outdoors, applied exercise science, nutrition for sports performance, skill acquisition and biomechanics, sport coaching, and management and administration
  • option topics in areas of Indigenous environmental management; business, tourism, nutrition and disability.

Practical experience

The degree provides you with practical experience that prepares you for the workforce.

  • Learn to facilitate activities such as bushwalking, rock climbing and a range of other outdoor pursuits
  • Complete an industry placement/project in final year.

What you will need

Students must obtain a National DCSI Screening, a Responding to Abuse and Neglect Certificate and Play by the Rules Certificate (free online course) in order to participate in placements.
