The Mechanical Engineering component of this course is a comprehensive, accredited degree providing both a theoretical and a real-world practical basis for designing and developing complex mechanical devices. Specialise in one of five areas - Advanced Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Systems, Materials Engineering, Maritime Engineering, and Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Design.

The engineering management component combines the problem-solving and technical design ability of engineering with executive organisational skills and the planning power of business and management.

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

studying with student engineers of all disciplines and completing core topics in electronics, professional skills, engineering design, engineering programming, engineering physics and materials, engineering mechanics, and mathematics

Second year

A typical second year may include:

focussing on mechanical engineering with core topics in engineering mathematics, analysis of engineering systems, mechanics and structures, fluid mechanics, dynamics, engineering materials, and thermodynamics and energy systems

a mechanical practice certificate workshop and a mechanical design project.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

topics in engineering project management together with studies that look at working as a professional engineer

core topics in mechanics of machines, project management for engineering and science, control systems, solid mechanics, applied thermo-fluid dynamics, and workplace preparation

a complete semester in industry with our national best-practice 20-week industry placement program.

Fourth year

A typical fourth year may include:

a return to Tonsley to complete a major mechanical engineering honours thesis allowing high-performing students to progress to a higher degree by research

topics in advanced civil engineering design, and standards, ethics and compliance

design of a major piece of infrastructure

a selection of electives in allied science and engineering areas.

Fifth Masters year

A typical masters year may include:

Research Methods and honours research project.

Elective subjects including cybersecurity for connected systems, financial performance, supply chains and innovation

Mechanical engineering

This major provides a broad focus on all aspects of mechanical engineering, with topics including solid mechanics, mechanics of machines, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, mechanical design, control systems, manufacturing and mechanics of materials. 

Electro-mechanical systems 

In many industrial sectors, mechanical engineers with a great understanding of electrical engineering principles are ideally preferred. This major uniquely provides a secondary course of study in electrical engineering on top of the core mechanical engineering topics. As well as the mechanical engineering topics, you would also cover electrical engineering principles, electrical machines, electrical energy and power systems.

Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Design

This major emphasises the use of mechanical engineering and digital design in a modern, industry 4.0 manufacturing environment. On top of the mechanical topics in the degree you would also cover Industry 4.0, cyber-physical systems, robotics and automation and how to design specifically to facilitate manufacturing.

Practical experience

The degree provides you with practical experience, helping you graduate work-ready.

You'll undertake a 20-week industry placement as part of your degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables you to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems.
Gain hands-on exposure to the cutting-edge equipment and facilities of Flinders University’s new technology precinct at Tonsley.
Undertake an integrated high-technology design consulting project, putting what you learn into practice.
