Choose from a range of majors that allow you to follow your interests and graduate ready to take on the world. Flinders’ Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) allows you to select a major in any of the following areas:

Mechanical engineering
This major provides a broad focus on all aspects of mechanical engineering, with topics including solid mechanics, mechanics of machines, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, mechanical design, control systems, manufacturing and mechanics of materials.

Electro-mechanical systems
In many industrial sectors, mechanical engineers with a great understanding of electrical engineering principles are ideally preferred. This major uniquely provides a secondary course of study in electrical engineering on top of the core mechanical engineering topics. As well as the mechanical engineering topics, you would also cover electrical engineering principles, electrical machines, electrical energy and power systems.

Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Design
This major emphasises the use of mechanical engineering and digital design in a modern, industry 4.0 manufacturing environment. On top of the mechanical topics in the degree you would also cover Industry 4.0, cyber-physical systems, robotics and automation and how to design specifically to facilitate manufacturing.

Materials engineering
The development and engineering of materials enable mechanical engineers to design and manufacture products and devices with the best possible performance in service. This major focuses on the use of materials in mechanical systems. As well as the mechanical engineering topics, you would also study areas such as materials structure and characterisation, materials selection, and failure analysis.

Maritime engineering
This major focuses on the use of mechanical systems in a maritime context. Taking this major will not only provide a comprehensive mechanical degree but also cover topics such as shipbuilding and hydrostatics. Students taking this major can transfer to the University of Tasmania at the end of year two to complete a specialised maritime engineering degree.

What you will study

First year A typical first year may include:	studying with student engineers of all disciplines and completing core topics in electronics, professional skills, engineering design, engineering programming, engineering physics and materials, engineering mechanics, and mathematics a common first year between all Flinders Bachelor of Engineering degrees means students can change specialisations without losing time at the end of the first year.
Second year A typical second year may include:	focussing on mechanical engineering with core topics in engineering mathematics, analysis of engineering systems, mechanics and structures, fluid mechanics, dynamics, engineering materials, and thermodynamics and energy systems a mechanical practice certificate workshop and a mechanical design project.
Third year A typical third year may include:	topics in engineering project management together with studies that look at working as a professional engineer core topics in mechanics of machines, project management for engineering and science, control systems, solid mechanics, applied thermo-fluid dynamics, and workplace preparation a complete semester in industry with our national best-practice 20-week industry placement program.
Honours year A typical honours year may include:	a return to Tonsley to complete a major mechanical engineering honours thesis allowing high-performing students to progress to a higher degree by research topics in advanced mechanical design, and standards, ethics and compliance a selection of electives in allied science and engineering areas.

The degree provides you with practical experience, helping you graduate work-ready.

You'll have the opportunity to undertake a 20-week industry placement as part of your degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables you to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems.
