Why a national skills shortage could fast track your career
According to a recent report by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, “the most pressing challenge facing business today is a shortage of skills and labour”.
They’re not alone in their assessment. The very first piece of legislation by the Albanese Government was designed to address the nation’s skills crisis by establishing Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA), a new agency to improve employment opportunities and economic growth.
What does this mean for your career opportunities? It means that there are plenty of jobs available in Australia, but we need people with the skills to fill them. People like you. Which is why right now is the time to be fearless and start university study at Flinders.
Whether you’re recently out of school, have been working for a while and want to change directions or are looking to upgrade your current skills with a postgraduate qualification, 2023 is the perfect time to start study.
A skill shortage isn’t something that can be fixed instantly. It takes time to train people to fill the over 285,000 vacancies as of July 2022.* Of course, not all those vacancies require tertiary education, but National Skills Commission employment projections indicate 9 in 10 new jobs are projected to require post-school education through to November 2026.*
And people with tertiary degrees earn more, not just here, but all over the world. In OECD countries, adults with a tertiary degree earn 54% more than secondary-educated people.**The road to a new job?
Whatever your state in life, and whatever your current skill levels, you can take advantage of the national skills shortage. Flinders has a range of pathways to university study. Our Foundation Studies Program is a free university bridging course designed to get you into one of over 30 Flinders degrees in as little as 5 weeks. Other pathways allow you to leverage vocational education or training (VET), or other work and life experience you may have, such as military service. Explore our university pathways for the one that’s right for you.
Short answer? As soon as possible. The job market is rapidly evolving and it’s important to move with it. Australia’s skills shortage is an opportunity for you to pursue the career of your dreams, and the global demand for people with tertiary qualifications could offer the chance to work internationally.
