Veteran Laksh MAPPs his way from the army to higher education
Veteran Laksh Bains served in the army for five years before getting the urge to study again and enrolling in the Military Academic Pathway Program (MAPP).
“I started getting the itch back of wanting to study again. I just wasn’t sure what it was that I wanted to study, or how I was going to study it, seeing as I didn’t do too well in year 12,” he said.
Laksh talks about how the MAPP helped him develop both the skills and confidence to succeed at university, through supportive teaching staff and a well-structured program.
“When I looked at the contents of the program and the duration of it, it was a no-brainer for me.
“Whilst I was in the army, I was very unsure about whether I had it in me to pursue tertiary studies. However, doing MAPP I got a good exposure to what uni is going to be like, what the study load is going to be like and what is expected of me. I felt prepared.
“Having not studied for a good part of five years, it was very easy to get back into. The support staff that work on MAPP are amazing. I couldn’t have asked for more.
“Most of all the MAPP gave me confidence that this is something that I could pursue and that I was capable of.
Following completion of the MAPP, Laksh has gone on to study a Bachelor of Behavioural Science at Flinders University.
