Veteran Corey MAPPs a new career path at Flinders
Corey Hayward enrolled in the Flinders University Military Academic Pathway Program (MAPP) as an entry pathway to university, after five years serving in the army.
Having never previously considered university, Corey decided it was time to broaden his career options by embarking on higher education, and the MAPP was a good way to ease into study.
“I left Defence to study as I felt like it was time to change direction of where my career was going to go,” he said.
“I never considered university as a pathway for me personally. I dropped out of school quite early and then joined the military not long after that, so the MAPP for me was a really good pathway into university.”
Now studying a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Therapy Studies at Flinders University, Corey says the MAPP helped teach him the fundamentals to set himself up for university success.
“The MAPP starts off by teaching you the real simple basics such as critical thinking, how to write an essay, what kind of guides you should use when writing, and how to reference correctly.
“The MAPP staff are very good at assisting you through these stages and there’s lots of opportunity to ask for help.
“It got you into the mindset of coming into a university where asking questions is encouraged and, in fact, needed.”
Corey said he encourages any current or former military personnel to consider applying for the MAPP, even if they have not previously considered higher education.
