Veteran Blake MAPPs his way to university success
After serving in the army for five years, Blake Groves completed the Flinders University Military Academic Pathway Program (MAPP) to fast-track his entry to university to study for his dream job.
“I was ready to move on from the army and the career pathways I wanted to go down required some more study,” he said.
Having not studied since year 12, Blake credits the MAPP for giving him the skills and confidence needed to start a Bachelor of Exercise Science degree at Flinders University.
“When I first started studying, I was a mixture of very nervous and really excited.
“I didn’t really think I would’ve done too well if I went to uni, but after the course I got a lot more confidence that I was able to study.
“I found the MAPP program very supportive. I hadn’t done any academic writing since high school, so to have that boost before coming into full-time study really helped.
“The most surprising thing was being able to overcome the things I said I was going to be bad at. I was really worried about writing essays, but it turns out if you do study hard enough and if you do put in the effort, that you can get that sort of stuff done, and you can do it well.
