Caring Futures Institute Our Research Our Projects EMINENT

EMINENT - Breast Cancer

"The EMINENT trial seeks to evaluate the feasibility of shared follow-up care of people with breast cancer after primary treatment between breast cancer specialists and GPs. Initial results demonstrate shared-care arrangements to be highly feasible with a 100% acceptance rate between breast cancer specialists and GP, effectively reducing hospital visits while maintaining optimal cancer care for patients with a broader oversight of comorbidities and other clinical concerns.”

- Chan

CFI-white-frame01@2x.png

The evolution of medicine has led to an increase in the number of patients surviving cancer. Survivors of breast cancer require support to prevent recurrence, surveillance of further secondary or new cancer, and comorbidity support. Current models focus on specialist centres and hospitals, putting unsustainable increased strain on healthcare systems. These current models are unsuitable for patients living outside of metropolitan regions.

Goal

To conduct a phase II randomised controlled clinical trial implementing the EMINENT intervention – a nurse coordinated, integrated, shared-care model involving cancer centre specialists and community-based general practitioners - for survivors of early breast cancer post-treatment follow-up compared to standard follow-up including provision of a Cancer Council Australia booklet, “Living Well After Cancer”.

Aims

To demonstrate the feasibility, acceptability and usefulness of a new model of care which could influence future post-treatment care for survivors of early breast cancer.
