FHMRI Neuroscience provides a dynamic training environment for postgraduate research students, and for undergraduate students in health, science, and social sciences. We provide placements for undergraduate students, as well as honours, medicine advanced studies, Masters and PhD research projects.
We partner with the Health Sector, Not-for-profits, Family support organisations, Government and Commercial entities to translate our neuroscience.
Professor Kim Hemsley has dedicated her research career to the study of disease pathogenesis in and treatment of childhood-onset dementia. She presently leads and co-ordinates a multi-disciplinary team and a comprehensive, innovative translational research program that is seeking to develop tools for predicting the rate of symptom-onset/disease-progression in Sanfilippo syndrome (a common cause of childhood dementia), elucidate the basis of neurogenic disease thereby providing a cogent target for therapies and evaluate novel treatments and provide biomarkers for monitoring therapeutic efficacy. Kim is also an active member of the Gender, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (GIDE) committee in the College of Medicine and Public Health, a member of the Scientific/Medical Advisory Boards of the Sanfilippo Children's Foundation (Australia) and the Childhood Dementia Initiative (Australia). She currently Chairs the Scientific Advisory Board Guidance Committee of the National MPS Society (USA).
