Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI) is a proud leader in life-changing medical and health research in Australia. We work tirelessly on some of the most challenging and pressing health concerns of our time. Our research is driven by the bold ambition to eliminate disease, improve the health of everyone and combat health inequities.
Our research is inspired by people. We work with health practitioners, patients and a vast network of rural and remote community partnerships to better understand the health needs of Australians and people across the globe.
FHMRI is home to some of Australia’s most accomplished researchers in the fields of cancer, sleep, infection and immunity, neuroscience, heart and vascular, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, mental health, and much more. Our teams continue to grow and we welcome passionate researchers who push the boundaries of health and medical knowledge to better understand how to improve human health.
To cure disease and improve health we must continue to investigate the fundamentals of how the human body works.
We understand that good health is more than just the absence of disease. And while medical advances have meant Australians are now living longer, healthier lives, we know that health inequalities still exist.
We champion the work of researchers by facilitating the flow of new knowledge from the lab and into the clinic sooner and more effectively.
FHMRI is not afraid to support cutting-edge ideas, whether they be cutting-edge research practices, new ways to support researchers or new ways to optimise health services. We work with health practitioners, patients and collaborate across an expansive network of disciplines, national and international universities and partnership organisations.
FHMRI’s researchers are informed and supported by experts in research methods, consumer engagement, data and analytics - they have access to state-of the art research facilities and are members of a community of like-minded researchers.
FHMRI respects and recognises philosophies, knowledges, research, contributions and sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia, since time immemorial. The FHMRI community commits to actively building understanding and acceptance of our shared histories, as we work towards a shared future. Importantly, the FHMRI community recognises the ongoing impacts of colonisation and is committed to reconciliation through our research. FHMRI's Reconciliation Action Plan statement →
FHMRI is committed to advancing gender inclusion, diversity and equity (GIDE) and providing a safe, collegial and fair environment for all. FHMRI will embed GIDE considerations in all activities and will proactively address barriers to equity and inclusion for staff and students and within research and development that it supports. We have Australia’s widest network of remote and rural campuses and community partnerships, extending from Mt Gamier to Adelaide in South Australia and from Alice Springs and Katherine to Darwin in the Northern Territory.
Our main campus is in Bedford Park in Adelaide. It is positioned in the centre of the Flinders’ Health Precinct and is co-located with Flinders Medical Centre teaching hospital and Flinders Private Hospital. This co-location of University and Hospital researchers, scientists and clinicians facilitates collaborative research which is focused on improving the health of individual patients and the community more broadly with less delay.
Construction has begun on the new $255 million Flinders Health and Medical Research Building.
Flinders University is investing in a world-class Health and Medical Research Building (HMRB) for Southern Adelaide. As a leading biomedical research facility, it will enable collaboration between researchers, healthcare and industry partners, translating world-class research into improved community healthcare outcomes.
Through FHMRI, we will welcome new partnerships and collaborations, enhance our existing relationships, and work with health practitioners and patients to better understand and offer solutions for Australian and global health needs.
