It is estimated that women with disability experience partner violence at higher rates than the wider population of women. The question is why and what can we do about it?
Hear from Dr Amy Marshall who explains her research into the journey of women with disability who have experienced domestic and family violence (DFV).
Working on a project called Connecting the Dots, funded by Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women (ANROWS), Amy's research aims to improve our understanding of what impact DFV has on this poorly represented group and how improved policy and practice can better meet their needs.
Amy is a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at Flinders University and a member of the Flinders Caring Futures Institute, Australia’s first fully-dedicated research centre for the study of self-care and caring solutions. Completing her PhD in 2015 about the emergency care response to intoxicated women victims of violence, Amy has a particular interest in health sector responses to violence against women, and in using co-design and co-production methodologies.
She has worked on a number of projects in the Disability and Community Inclusion team at Flinders regarding misrecognition between people with disabilities and support workers, family violence prevention and response strategies for people with disabilities, as well as supporting the mental health of young people with autism to prevent bullying. Amy is also undertaking research into aged care with the newly established Aged Care Centre for Growth and Translational Research.
