Description
The scholarship has been established through a generous donation by the City of Mitcham to commemorate Mr Harvey Hayes, the former Town Clerk of the City of Mitcham who served in that position for a period of 27 years (1952-1979) and who was invested with the OBE in 1980 for his services to Local Government. The scholarship has been established to assist Flinders University undergraduate students living within the City of Mitcham area, who are making a positive contribution to the local area. The award will continue as long as donations and earnings thereon are sufficient.
The scholarship is awarded for a period of one year. Previous recipients can re-apply.
Recipients would normally be expected to be enrolled on a full time basis. Recipients who are approved to be enrolled part time will be eligible for pro rata payment based on enrolment load.
On completion of their scholarship, recipients are required to submit a brief profile report which will be provided to the City of Mitcham Council and may be used for promotional purposes.
Eligibility
Applicants for the scholarship must:
- be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or permanent humanitarian visa holder; and
- be living within the City of Mitcham (postcodes 5039, 5041, 5042, 5050, 5051, 5052, 5062, 5064, 5150, 5156); and
- be positively contributing to the communities within the City of Mitcham through assisting with community groups, supporting community members, formal or informal volunteering, or other means; and
- be commencing, or be enrolled full time, in an undergraduate degree at Flinders University
Selection Criteria
The scholarship will be awarded:
- on a demonstrated positive contribution to the City of Mitcham; and
- academic merit; and
- preference will be given to students who are able to demonstrate financial need.
Whilst all students are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to students in their first year of study.
Selection will be made in accordance with procedures approved by the Director, Student Administration.

Applicants will need to demonstrate financial hardship to apply for this scholarship. This can be done uploading a recent Centrelink (or DVA) Income Statement which shows you are currently in receipts of government means tested benefits. Applicants not in receipt of government means tested benefits must be able to demonstrate financial hardship form by completing and uploading the Financial Hardship Form available below.
