First Nations communities leading tobacco endgame: co-design with remote community stores to reduce commercial tobacco availability

This is an exciting research project for a First Nations scholar to undertake a PhD in collaboration with remote community stores and Aboriginal community-controlled health services. Nested within an NHMRC Ideas Grant,  the aim of this research is to develop innovative supply-side strategies to reduce commercial tobacco use in remote First Nations communities, using a participatory, community-based approach to identify key issues and priorities for reducing tobacco sales, co-design feasible, culturally appropriate and financially sustainable strategies to do so, and pilot and evaluate their impact and acceptability. 

Opportunities within this PhD may include: 

• Qualitative research of community views about reducing tobacco availability
• Quantitative and/or qualitative evaluation of pilot strategies 
• Exploring barriers and facilitators to scaling up strategies
• Contributing to national and global advocacy for approaches to reducing commercial tobacco availability

Benefits

A scholarship is available for 3-3.5 years. Eligible students will receive the Professor Lowitja O’Donoghue Indigenous Student Postgraduate Research Scholarship rate, currently $50,000 p.a. Flinders University will provide laptop, tuition fees and project costs.
