The College Indigenous Research Scholarship (CIRS) opportunity will support an Indigenous* undergraduate student in their second or third year in the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work (CEPSW) to learn about research specific to a project (see details below) within the College.
The scheme aims to: (1) expose Indigenous students to high-quality research carried out in the College, (2) help develop their research skills, and (3) foster an interest in pursuing a career in research.
*The CIRIS scheme supports Indigenous undergraduate students, as outlined by the NHMRC: “Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Peoples are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin and are accepted as such by the community with which the person associates” (Ethical conduct in research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities: Guidelines for researchers and stakeholders, p. 25).
The applicant must:
The project is titled Aboriginal Outcomes Framework & Assessment Tool. The project commenced in 2021 and developed a culturally informed practice tool that assesses the safety and wellbeing outcomes of Aboriginal children and their families informed by research and cultural knowledge and wisdom inclusive of Aboriginal leaders, Aboriginal practitioners and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations. Yarning circles have been the main method of consultation to construct the tool. This tool is ready to use in 2022. The project will be moving into Phase Two in 2022. The assessment tool will be trialed and tested with the Aboriginal Family Support Services (AFSS). Data will be collected while the tool is being used.
The successful student be mentored by the project lead in how to collect and order data for the purposes of analysis. The project lead will be working alongside a Senior Epidemiologist from the Early Intervention Research Directorate (EIRD) to also upskill in data management, cleaning, and analysis. This allows the student to watch, learn, and immerse themselves in data collection and cleaning for the purpose of research. They will also be introduced to staff at the AFSS and EIRD, therefore experiencing how research and practice come together in agencies responding to Aboriginal families.
The project commences in Semester One 2022 and will be completed by 31 December 2022.
The application, together with relevant documents, is to be emailed to cepsw.research@flinders.edu.au by COB Monday 28th February 2022. The application must be filled out correctly.
Late applications will not be considered.
