C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship

C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships are valued at up to $60,000 over three years. They are residential scholarships which commemorate the achievements of one of Australia's most respected pastoral pioneers. Charles Hawker served in the First World War and went on to become a distinguished scholar and leading figure in the Federal Parliament, prior to his tragic death in the Kyeema aircraft accident in 1938.

The Charles Allan Seymour Hawker Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund was established by the late Kathleen Lilias Needham to perpetuate the memory of her brother, South Australian born Charles Allan Seymour Hawker by means of a memorial scholarship.

Most scholars are first year undergraduates however 2^nd and 3^rd year and post graduate students may also be considered. Successful applicants can study at the Flinders University and reside at St Mark’s College in North Adelaide.

Exceptional postgraduate scholars can follow in Charles’ footsteps by enrolling at Trinity College and Cambridge University in the UK.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

Australian citizens
Normally in their 1st year of an undergraduate degree, however 2nd and 3rd year and Postgraduate students may also be considered.

Successful applicants are those who most convincingly demonstrate their potential as a future leader, the contribution they have made to their school and community and their academic ability, in keeping with the example C.A.S. Hawker set as a leader and his contribution and service to Australia.

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on personal qualities as well as academic ability. Successful applicants are capable of demonstrating their potential as a future leader and the contribution they have made to their school and wider community. Preference is given to applicants aspiring to a career in public affairs, politics and / or community service. Students from regional areas are encouraged to apply.

Applications open in early December after year 12 results are known and close in early January, to allow successful applicants to commence their university year. Short listed applicants are required to attend an interview with the Trustees in late January. Depending on circumstances, the interview may be via video conferencing. Applicants are advised of the status of their application by early February.
