HDR Student Induction

Flinders University considers formal induction to be an invaluable introduction to life as a HDR student. As such, all commencing HDR students are required to attend the mandatory Induction Program, consisting of an Online Induction and an Induction Seminar.

The HDR Induction is your first milestone, due two months into your candidature. The Induction process ensures that you are equipped with the knowledge and resources to start your research successfully, and consists of two parts below. This process also asks you to reflect on your current skills and attributes, your career aspirations and the skills you need to succeed. 

Part 1: HDR Online Induction

The HDR Online Induction is a compulsory component of your higher degree by research candidature and provides you with the necessary information required to kickstart your degree. This induction will take you approximately 3.5 hours to complete, and you can complete it in sections. Once complete, you will be directed to Inspire where you will be asked to complete a form that adds the compulsory online induction to your milestone record. The course includes the following modules:

• Module 1: Getting Started with your HDR – including content on higher degrees by research and research theses, and an online modules that introduces students to the research process, research methods and how to put a proposal together.
• Module 2: Managing your Candidature – including content on systems and processes, supervisory relationship and online modules on working with supervisors and meetings and communication.
• Module 3: Research Management – including Flinders specific information and polices  and online modules on research integrity and ethics, the responsible conduct of research, authorship, Intellectual Property (IP) and data management.
• Module 4: Skills Development – including content on the guiding principles and framework, developing skills and activities such as setting up a ResearchNow profile.
• Module 5: Research Support – including content on research services and research support opportunities.
• Module 6: Course Completion – requiring students to complete all previous modules, before being directed to complete the Inspire induction form and register in Induction Seminar.

Part 2: HDR Induction Seminar

This is a compulsory two-hour Induction Seminar held on campus each semester for new HDR students, usually at the end of March and August. In the seminar, you will connect and network with your peers over coffee, and hear from the Dean of Graduate Research, the Office of Graduate Research staff as well as current and past students sharing their experiences in a panel. If you are unable to attend the compulsory HDR Induction Seminar, please let us know and you will be able to view the recording and complete the requirement online.
