Breaking the Cycle: Working together for a safer future

ARC Centre of Excellence for Prisoner Reintegration

Australia is facing a big challenge with reincarceration. Nearly half of the 67,000 people released from prison each year end up back behind bars within two years. This cycle is driven by issues like homelessness, drug dependence, and mental health problems.

By providing appropriate support frameworks that are culturally informed, strengths-based and inclusive of lived experience, we can break the cycle and help people avoid returning to prison. This evidence-led approach recognises the importance of addressing the underlying factors which too frequently derail good desistance journeys.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Prisoner Reintegration, led by Flinders University in collaboration with The University of Western Australia, University of Technology Sydney and Monash University, is currently in the establishment phase.
