Yuexiu Shen

Yuexiu was born in Fujian Province, China in 1992 and relocated to Australia in 2016. Yuexiu joined the Art Gallery of South Australia in December 2020. Starting as a volunteer curatorial assistant and later becoming an assistant curator, she works for both Asian Art and Contemporary Art departments. Yuexiu was awarded the Lorrain Hossack Emerging Curator fellowship in April 2023. Her specialty lies within historic Chinese arts of a diverse medium, including ceramics, lacquerware, textile, brush and ink paintings, calligraphy, prints and sculptures. Her interest also expands to other historical and contemporary art of Asia, including Japanese and Indonesian arts. Yuexiu’s doctorate study focuses on the southern Chinese trade ceramics found in Indonesia. Her research maps out the maritime trade routes between southern China and Indonesia, and in doing so, the research recognised their role as a cultural bridge connecting southern China and Southeast Asia. With educational backgrounds in English language and literature, teaching, and arts and cultural management, Yuexiu is also strongly interested in the East Asian literati world and its representation in visual arts.
