Sam is an internationally renowned paramedic and academic specialising in paramedic education. During his clinical career he worked as an ambulance paramedic, solo response paramedic, practice placement educator, training officer, and lecturer/practitioner. Sam is currently a senior lecturer in paramedicine at Flinders University but has worked across Australia at several other universities. Sam's teaching career spans more than a 20 year history of teaching, curriculum design and assessment design.  Sam's current Doctoral studies used a multiphase mixed methods research approach to explore the utility of Lave and Wenger's (1991) Communties of Practice (CoPs) held in virtual reality (VR) to prepare and support student paramedics during work-integrated learning. Sam is the designer, co-author and editor of the popular Fundamentals of Paramedic Practice (3rd ed) book published by Wiley, selling in over 60 countries worldwide, contributing to paramedic education on a global scale:

Teaching interests

Spanning a 20 year history in academia, Sam has taught almost all aspects of the paramedic curriculum. Sam is an advocate for reflective practice and reflexivity as primary methods for developing curiosity. Sam's teaching interests now centre around the utility of virtual reality and other novel technologies for encouraging curiosity and deeper learning in paramedic education, including for the preparation and support of students for work-integrated learning.
