Ruth Vasey's academic career started with an interest in theatre and comparative culture. Having studied Drama at UNSW she spent four years at the East-West Center in Hawaii where she studied Asian theatre and music, and also worked as a program selector for the Hawaii International Film Festival. On her return to Australia she taught in the Film Studies program at UNSW. A Commonwealth Scholarship enabled her to undertake doctoral studies in England, where researched Hollywood's relationship with its international audiences. Her book on this subject won the prestigious international Kraszna-Kraus Moving Picture Book Award in 1997. She has since published widely on the idustrial, social and aesthetic history of the American cinema. She lives with her husband, Richard Maltby, and their son Ben in the Adelaide Hills.
