Lecturer in Nursing
College of Health and Enablement
Dr Anne Mette Adams (Mette) is an intensive care nurse, lecturer, and implementation science fellow at Flinders University in the College of Health and Enablement. She is a member of the Caring Futures Research Institute and serves as the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses SA/NT State President. Drawing on extensive clinical experience across diverse critical care settings in Denmark, Norway, and Australia, she brings a rich and practical perspective that continues to shape her teaching and research.
Since joining Flinders University in 2016, Mette has been dedicated to supporting the next generation of nurses. Her teaching interests span evidence-based practice and knowledge translation, person-centred fundamental care, and critical care nursing. Central to her teaching philosophy is the creation of a student‑centred learning environment where content is meaningful and engaging, and where students feel empowered and safe to speak up, ask questions, and challenge ideas.
As a researcher, Mette is committed to improving care for critically ill patients and their families, as well as advancing the wellbeing of ICU clinicians. She has a particular interest in the non‑pharmacological management of challenging behaviours in critical care. Her PhD centred on the development of clinical practice guidelines for the non-pharmacological management of patient agitation in the ICU, a topic that continues to influence her ongoing research.
Mette collaborates closely with clinicians, consumers and the Centre for Clinical Practice Guidelines in Denmark and works across a range of methodologies, including Delphi studies, qualitative approaches, and mixed‑methods designs. Her work contributes to strengthening the evidence base underpinning critical care practice and enhancing the delivery of safe, person‑centred care.
