Leonie Hewitt has had extensive experience working as a midwife providing midwifery-led continuity of care in both New Zealand and Australia. She helped to establish the first free standing birth centre in Australia, at Ryde, NSW, where she worked for 12 years. She also was instrumental in establishing a community-based midwifery-led antenatal/postnatal continuity of carer model in Sydney and a private practice in Wellington NZ, where she worked for several years.
Leonie was employed for five years as a Clinical Midwife Consultant at Weastmead Hospital Sydney, before moving to SA at the end of 2022. She submitted her PhD and commenced work as a lecturer at Flinders University in 2024. Leonie has published six articles investigating the management of midwifery group practice to improve service sustainability and has co-authored a chapter in the midwifery textbook 'Preparation for Practice'.
