Ilke is an Associate Professor of Economics at the College of Business, Creative Arts, Law and Social Sciences (BCLS), where he also serves as the HDR Contact Officer and previously held the role of Research Lead. He is a section editor for economics at PLOS ONE, a leading international multidisciplinary journal, and is one of the founding organisers of the PhD Summer Institute in International Trade & Industrial Organisation. He is also a fellow of the Global Labor Organization (GLO).

His research sits within applied microeconomics, with particular expertise in industrial organisation, auctions, health economics, and development economics. Ilke has an extensive publication record and a strong track record in securing competitive research funding, with grants from organisations including the Australian Centre for Financial Studies, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), the Regional Australia Institute, iMove CRC, and the Australian Research Council (Linkage). He has also contributed to a tender for the Victorian Auditor-General's Office, examining the performance of electronic gaming machine entitlement allocations in Victoria.

Internationally, Ilke has held visiting researcher positions at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, the University of Southern Denmark, the University of Tübingen in Germany, and the University of Adelaide. He has served as an external reviewer for grant programs at the Global Development Network, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, and the Australian Research Council.
