Thyne Reid Foundation Scholarship

Growing up in a small country town, Georgina Allen developed a sense of life in rural communities. While studying primary education at Flinders University, Georgina attended a professional experience lecture where she was inspired to apply for the scholarship funded by Thyne Reid Foundation.

Georgina says, “I wanted to challenge myself and make the most of my final teaching placement.”

Receiving the scholarship enabled Georgina to complete a ten week placement at Ceduna Area School.

“The scholarship allowed me to immerse myself in a new community without the burden of worrying about my finances.”

“I was able to focus on learning as much as I could and getting involved in the community. It was an experience that I do not feel I would have gotten without the scholarship.”

Georgina’s previous experiences of living in the country, and the unique opportunities for community engagement helped her to relate to the students in her class. “It was easier to build strong relationships with students and staff, as you have the opportunity to get involved in the community outside of school as well, for example playing netball or watching the football. Being able to bring the community into the classroom and vice versa was a powerful tool.”

Georgina also acknowledges that a small community has its challenges, “I was constantly aware of how I was presenting myself outside of school and on weekends. This is not something you have to think about when teaching in a metropolitan school.”

During her placement, Georgina gained many experiences that were valuable for both her and her students. “One of the most memorable experiences during placement was planning and taking my class on an excursion to a local significant site.”

Overall, Georgina says, “I had the most incredible experience and I feel that I have gained more confidence, experience and knowledge about teaching and living in a remote community. I have also made some great connections with the people, school and community of Ceduna. I cannot thank the Thyne Reid Foundation enough for the scholarship they donated.  I absolutely loved my placement and didn’t want it to end!”

“I would highly recommend applying for a rural scholarship if you have an interest in experiencing teaching in a rural community. It is such an incredible opportunity and worth going out of your comfort zone.”
