Tulasi Rae knew from a young age that she wanted to be a nurse. She says, “Even as a child I really wanted to help sick people.”
Tulasi completed a Diploma of Nursing in Nepal and had been working for two years as a registered nurse before deciding to extend her skills by studying a Nursing degree at Flinders University.
She says, “I loved that we had to do research for every assignment and assessment, which was helpful for developing our knowledge and strengthening our thinking capabilities.”
“Support from tutors, colleagues and staff was always there, and I got to experience different clinical placements, which will be very good for my career.”
Tulasi's clinical placements included four weeks at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and a rural placement at Lameroo Hospital, more than 200km out of Adelaide.
Tulasi says, “From my heart, I would like to thank those who donate to the scholarship for their kind gesture.”
While she loved these practical experiences, Tulasi says it was very hard not being able to work to pay her rent and groceries while on the full-time placements – especially when she was away from home on the rural placement.
She says the financial challenges made her feel “emotionally, mentally and financially unstable” and she found it difficult to focus on her studies.
But Tulasi found huge relief when she received a Matthew Flinders Scholarship.
“The scholarship really eased my mind to be able to focus on my studies, instead of worrying about how I would pay my bills.”
With a deep sense of gratitude for the alumni, staff and friends of Flinders who have generously supported the Matthew Flinders Scholarship, Tulasi says, “From my heart, I would like to thank those who donate to the scholarship for their kind gesture. It genuinely relieved my financial burden and gave me hope.”
Tulasi has now graduated and is working full time as a nurse at an aged care home.
“My future goals are to provide good nursing care to people so they feel hopeful about their lives, and to make my family proud.”
