Amy is part of the Gringai Clan of the Wonnara Nations in New South Wales. Raised in Adelaide, she is the second eldest of seven children and the first in her family to go to university.
With a strong interest in the continuity of care that a doctor can provide to patients and their family, Amy applied to study medicine at Flinders University.
However, she found it difficult to meet the costs associated with studying and in 2019 she received the Professor Michael Kidd AM Scholarship. The scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students encourages the retention and success of those studying a health profession at Flinders.
‘The scholarship helps me to feel supported and gives me motivation to keep pushing through hard times,’ says Amy. ‘It means that I can access study resources I would not have been able to otherwise. For example, a lot of resources are online now and cost a monthly fee of up to $70.’
The support is also building Amy’s confidence in her abilities and creating further opportunities for her education and her future.
