Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health
Over many years Anita had difficulty sleeping and felt like she was living on a knife edge. She suffered from constant headaches, feeling tired all day and found it difficult to function. Sleeping pills and day naps only increased Anita’s symptoms and she developed insomnia.
Not knowing how to resolve the issues, and with it gradually getting worse, she stopped socialising. ‘I isolated myself from people as much as possible because I was so tired and had no patience. I felt like a self-imposed outcast,’ says Anita.
Around five years ago Anita’s doctor recommended FHMRI's Sleep Health at Flinders University. It was here, through a sleep study that Anita was diagnosed with the breathing-disrupted sleep condition, sleep apnoea, and was given the treatment she needed to improve her sleep health and overall wellbeing.
‘I was given support to get my sleeping patterns and my life back to normal,’ says Anita. ‘Where once I felt like I was always living on a knife edge, I now wake up feeling refreshed and have an inner peace.’
Anita believes the sleep study and resulting support from the Sleep Health centre has added extra years to her life and she is keen to see others benefit from the research at Flinders University.
She says, ‘If the Sleep Health can do for others what they've done for me then they'll be giving many people a new lease on life.’
Anita has just started dog agility training with her beagle - something she couldn't have contemplated five years ago.
She says, ‘I now feel in control of my life.’
Good sleep is a vital and often overlooked necessity of daily life. It makes us more productive and gives us the opportunity to think beyond ourselves in serving others in the community.
To improve sleep health throughout the community Flinders University's Sleep Health centre needs your support. 100% of your donation will support sleep health research at the University.
