A scholarship has supported Jai to meet the costs of living away from home.
Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) student Jai Meyers has a real passion for science. Through his Enhanced Program for High Achievers, Jai has been able to extend his studies and conduct research into the role of protein in breast cancer cells.
Jai is from Whyalla, in 2016 he moved to Adelaide to take up his science degree at Flinders University. ‘Moving away from home at the age of 17 was a very big challenge, especially the financial burden of living away from home,’ says Jai.
Jai received a donor-funded scholarship to relieve the financial pressures of studying and to help him to meet the extra costs of living away from his family.
‘The funds have been essential for me to be able to live in Adelaide to undertake my studies,’ says Jai. ‘The scholarship allowed me to purchase a computer and the support materials needed for my degree. It also contributed to my living expenses.’
Receiving a scholarship has also made a big difference to Jai personally and professionally. ‘The opportunities I have had at Flinders and also in living away from home, have allowed me to be more confident, independent and learn to act in a professional manner.'
‘Creating more opportunities through donor-funded scholarships would make the world of difference for students striving to do their best,’ says Jai.
This year Flinders University’s Student Impact Scholarship program provided ten students in financial need with a $5,000 scholarship. The funds help to ease the financial burden for students relocating from rural and regional areas to study, purchasing necessary study resources, and meeting living expenses.
However, we need your support to continue to provide scholarships for students, like Jai, so that they can focus on their studies, achieve their degree and work towards their personal career goals.
100% of your tax-deductible donation will support Flinders University students in financial need through our Matthew Flinders Scholarship.
