There are many benefits of social inclusion in schools. Inclusive education is about the inclusion of all children, regardless of their difference or diversity. In an inclusive environment, the potential for development in young people with disability is greater. So what are the barriers to inclusive education in our schools?
Hear from education researcher Dr Julie McMillan who explains the benefits of inclusive classrooms in South Australian schools and how her research is helping develop a tiered approach framework for implementing inclusive education. Julie, alongside Flinders colleague Dr Jane Jarvis, co-authored a chapter in Australia's first handbook on schoolwide positive behaviour support. Julie is a senior lecturer and researcher at Flinders University who is currently conducting work into inclusivity in South Australian schools. Julie has also worked as an academic in teaching and research at University of Illinois in the US. Prior to her academic career she taught students with complex and extensive support needs. Julie specialises in the areas of curriculum, instruction, augmentative and alternative communication and positive behaviour support for students with complex disability including autism, physical disabilities, intellectual disability and complex communication needs.
