'Be like the sun and you shall warm the earth” is the motto Mabel Seglah, MEd(LeaderMgmt) ’16, lives by.
As a junior high school teacher in Ghana for 12 years, Mabel enjoyed watching her young students achieve their Basic Education Certificate Examinations. She then had the opportunity to realise her dream of coming to Australia to study a Master of Education (Leadership and Management) at Flinders University. “It added an international touch to my educational experience and provided me with the opportunity to acquire quality education that is internationally recognised,” said Mabel.
Mabel says the highlight of her time in Adelaide was volunteering at Kardinya House. “I provided support for young people with disability. Being able to live-in with these young ladies changed my perspectives about people living with disability. I am forever grateful to the Kardinya committee for that experience.’
Graduating at the end of last year, Mabel returned home to Ghana to “be like the sun”. She acquired two plots of land to establish a primary school with a focus on teaching at international standards. She is now seeking financial support or a partnership to help realise her dream of providing quality education to young Ghanaians.
‘Together we can be an agent of change in my society, contributing to development through quality education for Ghanaian children,’ says Mabel.
Mabel’s passion for supporting education in Ghana doesn’t stop there. ‘My heart’s desire is to establish reading and oracy clubs in public schools, especially those in rural areas,’ she says. ‘This will help develop effective reading and communication skills in students right from primary level.’
